We’re pleased to share with you the ways that The Cowan Foundation is making a difference in the communities where our employees and clients work and live.
For The Foundation, 2021 was a record year for giving to numerous charities and organizations. We are grateful to our employees, clients, and business partners who have made it possible for The Cowan Foundation to make a positive difference in the lives of Canadians and the broader well-being of our communities.
Particularly over the past two years, we’ve seen a critical need for health care support and resources in our communities. In 2021, The Foundation worked with the following organizations doing important work for community health care in Southern Ontario:
Cowan Community Health Hub
The Cowan Foundation donated $800,000 to support a new community health hub in Brant County, which opened its doors in November 2021 in Paris, Ontario. It will provide vital health and wellness services to Brant County residents.
Personal Support Worker (PSW) Program at Conestoga College
2021 marked the second year of The Foundation’s $5M commitment to grow and develop Conestoga College’s PSW program to address the urgent need for workers that surfaced at the onset of the pandemic. This donation provided state-of-the-art technology for students at the Cowan Health Sciences Centre at Conestoga and within five labs in hospitals and retirement homes in remote communities.
In 2021, close to 2000 students enrolled in the PSW program, the highest number of students of any PSW college program in Ontario. The Foundation also directly supported the first group of PSW students through entrance scholarships and covered costs for uniforms and CPR and First Aid certifications. This group graduated in April 2021.
MINT Memory Clinics
Supporting memory and dementia care, The Foundation committed $110,000 per year for three years to fund an educational and networking event called the Cowan Conference for MINT Memory Clinics: Building our Community of Practice. This virtual two-day conference helped MINT Memory Clinic team members and supporting specialists update their knowledge and skills to provide compassionate, high-quality care to those experiencing dementia and other memory-related conditions.
St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation, London
After many years of research and development, St. Joseph’s has launched an app to help individuals manage post-concussion symptoms. MyBrainPacer™ App is a free tool to help users effectively pace and plan their daily activities, and in 2021, The Foundation provided the final installment toward a three-year $120,000 commitment.
